The Diary Of A Young Girl - Anne Frank
In July 1942, thirteen-year-old Anne Frank and her family, fleeing the occupation, went into hiding in an Amsterdam warehouse. Over the next two years Anne vividly describes in her diary the frustrations of living in such close quarters, and her thoughts, feelings and longings as she grows up. Her diary ends abruptly when, in August 1944, they were all betrayed.
I read this book when I was quite young, at the time I didn't realise it was a true story. I didn't learn about World War 2 until I was 12 which is when I re-read it and truly appreciated it. The diary is written by a young Anne Frank going through school life, liking boys, rebelling against her parents, having to make no noise and dreaming of being free. It is told with such an honest voice. I know there is a lot of dispute over how much of it was edited by Anne's father afterwards, which means a lot of the story contains Anne talking about her great relationship with him; but aside from that you really get to know what it was like for a young girl living as normal a life as possible, whilst hiding in a small attic in order to stay alive.
