I Capture The Castle - Dodie Smith

'I write this sitting in the kitchen sink' is the first line of this timeless, witty and enchanting novel about growing up. Cassandra Mortmain lives with her bohemian and impoverished family in a crumbling castle in the middle of nowhere. Her journal records her life with her beautiful, bored sister, Rose, her fadingly glamorous stepmother, Topaz, her little brother Thomas and her eccentric novelist father who suffers from a financially crippling writer's block. However, all their lives are turned upside down when the American heirs to the castle arrive and Cassandra finds herself falling in love for the first time.

This book was such a surprising read for me. It was published in 1948 so I expected it to be quite serious and written very formally. It was written very similar to children and young adult books from the past 10 years. The narrative was quirky and relateable and the characters have such similar thoughts and feelings to myself at their age. I loved it so much. It is in my top 10 books.
I am a big fan of Jacqueline Wilson and picked up this book because she said it was her favourite. I'm so glad I did. Especially this copy because the cover is beautiful.
It looks like a long book but it flows so well that it only took a few days to read and I can't wait to re-read it and underline my favourite parts.
